Henry County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center

New Castle, Indiana

  • Justice
  • Jails and Prisons

To expand Henry County’s outdated and overpopulated downtown jail, the Henry County Commissioners set out on a path to develop new housing and treatment options for those currently serving time. However, the downtown location quickly became a hindrance to its furthered growth. The opportunity to build a brand new jail facility became a more preferred choice. They were also able to implement a familiar and proven design based on a similar jail facility. Commissioners worked with the Indiana Department of Corrections to purchase a state-owned property and begin the design and construction process for the new Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center.

The facility will consist of all the functions required for jail operations, including Sheriff’s administration space, video visitation/arraignment stations, intake, sallyport, foodservice and laundry, medical, and housing. The Housing unit will contain 240 beds in total. The two-tier housing pod is subdivided into nine units to give officers maximum flexibility for classification. The facility overall provides the Sheriff with 12 classifications to optimize jail efforts. An elevated 2-story control provides excellent sightlines into the dayrooms of the entire pod.

The Sheriff’s administration space contains a detective area, workout room, evidence storage, a multipurpose room.

The facility also contains minimum security dorms for rehabilitation and treatment programs.

It's Flat Lay Friday! 🎉

Interior Design Intern @abigailredick and Interior Design/Marketing Intern @_noellequinones assembled this flat lay.

The flat lay originates with our @fort_wayne_community_schools Levan R. Scott Academy Elementary School project!

The multi-textured and colorful interior design finishes and materials create a vibrant and playful space, provoking students' creativity throughout the school day. For the long-term use and lifespan of the school, we ensured the finishes were all durable and cleanable. Through the bold colors, warm tones, and detailed elements of the interior, a unique space is designed to make students feel enthusiastic to come to school. #DesignedToDoMore | #InteriorDesign #Architecture #Architect

"Elevatus not only understands the higher education market place, they understand our university needs comprehensively. They are able to convert learning modalities and educational pedagogies into physical, durable locations within our buildings that serve faculties and students in an excellent fashion.”

Arthur E. Snyder, Ed.D.

Past President, Indiana Tech

"The level of service that Fort Wayne Community Schools received during the construction of New Tech Academy was superb. The architects were innovative and took the time to truly understand the different learning modalities that we wanted. They always gave close attention to details, schedule, and construction costs."

Liz Bryan

Director, New Tech Academy Wayne High School

"Sanilac County has continuously relied on Elevatus for their expertise and dedication to quality of service, and I have actively worked with them in the planning stages of our renovation and jail expansion project. I give my full recommendation for Elevatus for design and construction on building projects."

Garry M. Biniecki

Sheriff, Sanilac County

"I want to express my appreciation to the customer-oriented Elevatus for a job well done on our penitentiary at Terre Haute. Their incorporation of many complex design modifications to the Central Utility Plant without falling a single day behind schedule was particularly impressive. I look forward to the possibility of working on future projects with them."

Clifton L. Spence, III

Senior Project Manager, Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Prisons, Washington, DC

"We chose Elevatus for our team on The Northeast Indiana Regional Public Safety Academy because of their extensive national experience in public safety, green, and educational facility design. Their role was critical in creating a building that was highly functional, energy-efficient, and striking in appearance. Elevatus receives my highest recommendation.”

Graham Richard

Mayor, 2000-2007, Fort Wayne, Indiana

"My experience with Elevatus has been excellent. I actively worked with them during the planning stages of rehabilitating an existing structure into a work release center, constructing a new jail facility, and expanding our existing Justice Building. They were always willing to listen to concerns and were sensitive to the county’s conservative spending sensitivity to the county’s conservative fiscal spending."

Ronald J. Robinson

County Commissioner, Kosciusko County, Warsaw, Indiana
